ABS was only an option in the 2001 Jeep Cherokee for models equipped with the Dana 35 rear axle. To determine if your vehicle has this axle and potentially has antilock brakes, crawl underneath the rear of the vehicle and inspect the passenger side upper webbing of the differential for a casting number, with "35C" indicating it is the Dana 35 axle. Upon turning on the ignition, check the instrument cluster lights for an illuminated ABS light. Another way to confirm the presence of ABS is to look next to the master cylinder for an ABS pump; if there is no pump, then ABS is not installed.

The 2001 Jeep Cherokee doesn't include an anti-lock brake system as standard; instead, ABS is available as an optional feature. ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking up when you brake suddenly or on slippery roads by managing the brakes at each wheel.
