Issues with the 4-wheel drive system in the 2005 Ford F-150 could involve the front driveshaft locking up because of leaky vacuum lines in the integrated wheel ends. Some owners have also noted that the vacuum solenoid may get stuck in the hubs while driving. To shift into 4WD, the control module uses contact plate position sensors to confirm the transfer case shift and activates the high-vacuum solenoid for up to 60 seconds, engaging the hubs by supplying them with a vacuum of at least 11 in.-Hg. The hubs remain engaged even after the vacuum supply is cut off. When shifting back to 2WD, the module triggers the low-vacuum solenoid, providing 6 to 7 in.-Hg of vacuum to the hub locks for a maximum of 30 seconds, disengaging the hubs and returning the vehicle to 2WD mode.

Issues with the four-wheel drive system in the 2005 Ford F-150 could result in a hazardous situation where the front drive shaft gets locked because of leaking vacuum lines from the wheel hubs. This can occur when the vacuum solenoid in the hubs becomes stuck while the vehicle is in motion. It may be necessary to replace the actuators to resolve this problem. Additionally, the 4WD shift motor might experience frequent malfunctions, leading to situations where the 4x4 indicator light fails to illuminate when engaging four-wheel drive or when there are cracks in the hoses.
