The manual transmission of the Ford Ranger can have issues with stiff shifting and difficulty engaging first gear, often due to clutch problems. Insufficient transmission fluid can also lead to issues. The master slave cylinder is another component that is prone to failure. When the master slave cylinder fails, Ranger drivers might observe fluid leaks, difficulty shifting gears, a loose or heavily worn clutch pedal, or contaminated brake fluid. Additional reasons for gear problems could involve a faulty pressure plate or disc. If either of these components wears out, you may hear squealing from the clutch as damaged springs and bearings in the pressure plate interfere with the disc. The typical cost for replacing the master cylinder in the Ranger ranges from $400 to $500, including both parts and labor.
