Some performance problems with the 2017 Ford Explorer 2.3 EcoBoost engine have been traced back to as early as 2015. This specific engine is found in various vehicles including the Ford Explorer and certain models of the Ford Focus. Complaints have surfaced about coolant odors in the exhaust, diminished cabin heat, and engine overheating, all stemming from the incorrect use of the cylinder head gasket. Originally intended for the Ford Mustang, this gasket was mistakenly utilized in the Ford Focus RS. Additionally, carbon build-up on the rear of the inlet valves and inlet walls of the engine has been identified in the 2.3 EcoBoost motors, possibly restricting airflow and impeding proper valve closure.

Here are some of the issues that have been documented with the 2017 Ford Explorer 2.3 Ecoboost: engine stalling during operation, delays in acceleration, failure to start the engine, and overall engine breakdown.

I drive a 2017 Ford Explorer with a 2.3 Ecoboost engine and have been having issues with cylinder 3 misfires. Turns out, like other Ecoboost owners, my problem is caused by coolant leaking into cylinder 3. Unfortunately, my model isn't included in the class action lawsuit, so I feel stuck. I'm considering switching back to Dodge as soon as possible.

I'm dealing with the same problem as MJ Hermann with my 2017 Explorer equipped with the 2.3 Ecoboost engine. The issue is a misfire in cylinder 3 caused by coolant leaking into it. The dealer recommended replacing the long block as a solution, even though the engine had less than 100,000 miles on it. Looking for more insights or advice from anyone who knows about this. The 2016 Ford Explorer has the same problem, and there's been no class action or resolution available. This has soured our experience, and we won't be purchasing a Ford again. We've owned 8 Fords with 4 drivers in the household. We're switching to Honda from now on.
