One benefit of an Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system compared to a hydraulic system is that it continues to provide steering assistance even if the engine stalls. However, this can also be a drawback, as if the EPS system fails while the engine is running, you lose steering assistance. A driver might be alarmed if this happens unexpectedly due to an electrical or electronic malfunction. EPS systems are advantageous because they do away with the need for a pump, hoses, and a drive belt tied to the engine, making use of variable power instead. Additionally, EPS systems can be designed so that the entire power assist mechanism is integrated with the rack and pinion steering gear or housed in the steering column.
