    I have a 2016 model and it's been nothing but trouble. The air conditioning has been an issue ever since we bought it in 2019, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes to blow cold air. We've had to replace the motor mounts twice, and it was leaking oil onto the exhaust, causing smoking. We also had to shell out $700 to replace the battery, which seems pretty typical. Recently, one of the halo lights on the driver's side went out, and BMW quoted us a whopping $3500 for the repair. On top of that, the rear air suspension has started acting up, with the back end sinking and riding very roughly until it's plugged back in. Dealing with this car has been a real headache.

    We've had a ton of issues with this car. Despite how smooth it drives when it actually works properly, it has caused us more problems than our older, more cost-effective vehicles. The back air suspensions have failed on us, resulting in a bumpy ride, we've been hit with chassis error messages, and the drivetrain malfunction even caused the wheel to lock up while I was driving. We've already had to bring it to the shop twice this month, paying $1700 on the first visit with no resolution, and now they're telling us the EME DC/DC converters are the issue, costing a massive $10k. And this is all happening with the car being just 7 years old! Our two-decade-old cars outperform the x5 by a long shot. In short, we're done with this car and won't be buying another BMW in the future.

    As of February 21, 2022, it appears that Pat, the writer, is suspected of being a liar or possibly hired by BMW to write positive reviews online. The 40e model was introduced in 2016. I took my car to a BMW dealership for a battery replacement, which ended up costing me approximately $2,000 including diagnostics. During the visit, the service advisor informed me of an oil leak from the electric motor and turbo, requiring the removal of the transmission to locate the source. This additional repair amounted to $4,565 plus tax.

    Upon investigation, it was discovered that the flywheel inside the electric motor had come apart, causing damage to the transmission wall and resulting in cracks. This was deemed a manufacturer defect, but the BMW dealership was unable to provide a resolution. Seeking assistance from other auto repair shops proved futile as BMW does not sell the necessary parts (electric motor with transmission) to external establishments.

    In summary, the total repair costs, including the transmission and flywheel at $14,728 and turbo replacement at $7,061, added up to $28,354 before taxes. Subsequently, the BMW dealership offered me $3,500 to purchase my car.

    We've encountered comparable issues. I bought the car in 2021 when it had 70,000 miles on it. Fast forward to now, two years later, with 95,000 miles on the odometer, and the engine needs to be swapped out. I've been diligent about changing the oil on schedule. Before this, I had to replace the brakes/rotors, rear suspension bags, air compressor, all four tires, one of the batteries, and now the engine has suffered catastrophic failure at just 7 years old, despite regular servicing. Dealing with BMW corporate has been unhelpful to say the least - they've even been outright rude. I've made up my mind to steer clear of BMW for all future purchases.
