Similar to most vehicles, it is recommended that the Subaru Crosstrek receive regular maintenance check-ups at a certified service center. Typically, the brakes should be examined and have their pads replaced between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, while rotors can last longer, between 70,000 and 100,000 miles. However, Subaru Crosstrek owners have reported needing to replace their rear and/or front brakes before hitting 50,000 miles, with some needing replacements before 20,000 miles. When the brake pads start to wear out, they can create grinding, squealing, or screeching noises as metal parts make contact with the rotors, potentially causing vibrations felt through the steering wheel or pedal. Another common issue with the Crosstrek is that calipers can easily gather road debris, particularly when driving off-road or on unpaved surfaces. Some owners have discovered rocks or pebbles caught in their calipers, leading to a rattling noise while in motion.

My wife had to get the brakes on her crosstrek replaced at 15,000 miles. Absolutely absurd!

I had the front brake pads and rotors changed at 32,000 miles on my Crosstrek, and now at 42,000 miles, I’ve had to replace the pads, rotors, and calipers in the rear! In my 50 years of driving, I've never had brakes wear out before hitting 70,000 miles, so don’t try to blame it on my driving. These brakes are just low-quality!

I own a 2019 Crosstrek and have already replaced the front and rear brake pads and rotors twice. At 32,000 miles, I fail inspection every year due to brake issues. I consider myself a cautious driver and usually extend the time between brake jobs, but I find myself needing work every 8,000 miles. This is my first Crosstrek, and I am frustrated and disheartened by this recurring problem. Researching online to investigate if this is a common issue, I had hoped to keep this car long-term, but after replacing the rear pads and rotors again, I doubt that will be the case.

I drive a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0 Premium with 750 miles on it, and I've already noticed some grooves on the rotors.

I have driven 45,000 miles and had to replace my brakes twice; both the front and back rotors were changed during the most recent brake replacement. The service technician mentioned that this is a common issue that he encounters frequently.

I currently have 68,574 miles on my 2018 Crosstrek. I drive cautiously and maintain regular maintenance on the vehicle. Despite this, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors twice already. Recently, I experienced a scary situation where my brakes felt stiff and began to smoke, leading to a diagnosis of issues with the front left and right calipers. The dealership quoted me $1100 for the repair, even though the brakes and rotors are only four months old.

On top of that, I've noticed that the paint on the Crosstrek is very thin and prone to chipping, despite me mainly driving on the interstate and paved roads with no off-roading activities. Additionally, there's been a persistent rattling noise coming from the front of the vehicle since day one, which the mechanics have not been able to identify. The windshield wipers also seem ineffective, especially at high speeds. These ongoing issues have left me feeling unsure and lacking confidence in the reliability of my Crosstrek.

My 2018 Crosstrek is at the shop for its 60000 km service, and they're saying I need to replace the rear brakes entirely - again, and the front brakes need to be ground down. Other than a 2000 Volvo, I've never had to do brake work on any of my new cars. My 2017 Subaru BRZ has similar mileage and no brake problems. Why do Crosstreks seem to have this issue?

There have been complaints about the brakes in the Subaru Crosstrek, including premature wearing of brake pads, warped rotors, and failures with the brake relay switch.
