For instance, if it's a screeching noise, it might be the serpentine belt. If it's a constant whining noise, it could be "alternator whine" which may sound like it's coming from the radio. Another possibility, especially if you hear it with the brakes applied, is something touching the rotors, even something as small as a dry leaf stem. I drive a 2006 car with 175k miles on it. Lately, I noticed a grinding noise like a brake pad was worn down, and then today a loud high-pitched noise started and my brakes completely failed. I tried turning off all electrical systems but the noise persisted until I shut off the car. Do you think there's some kind of emergency warning system that activated? I've been driving Toyotas for 4 decades and this was a first for me.
