The 2004 Honda Pilot is commonly known to experience issues with a shuddering torque converter. This problem can be triggered by old or subpar transmission fluid and faulty gear switches. Drivers may notice a rumbling sensation under the dashboard around speeds of 35-40 mph, especially if the transmission has under 25,000 miles. Temporarily alleviating the noise by lightly pressing on the gas or brake, the shuddering tends to come back, leading to a drop in engine revs. Some owners have found success by changing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches to address the shuddering, as well as arranging for a transmission flush and filter replacement using a fully synthetic fluid. Specifically, it is recommended to use 4 quarts of Redline D4 ATF to replace the conventional Honda fluid originally installed.
