Typically, a ticking sound coming from the engine can be a sign of low oil levels or a failing fuel pump. However, in the Toyota Tacoma, this noise is more likely the result of self-cleaning fuel injectors. Toyota engineers introduced this technology in 2015 to prevent carbon buildup in the injectors. Without this self-cleaning mechanism, the performance of the vehicle can be affected over time as clogged fuel injectors can hinder proper functioning. The ticking noise may be heard for as long as 10 minutes or as briefly as 10 seconds after driving at high speeds and transitioning into a "hot" idle, when the engine is at a high temperature. The system keeps track of the number of cycles the injectors have gone through, their temperature, and the duration of driving to activate the self-cleaning process.

Low oil led to a valve tapping noise. The dealer failed to even inspect the oil levels. I decided to leave and promptly got the oil changed. To my surprise, the oil was nearly depleted. This simple fix resolved the issue.
