The main reason the alarm randomly sounds in a Toyota Highlander is typically due to a faulty hood latch switch. Over time, the metal connectors in the switch can corrode, leading to resistance spikes that trigger the alarm. This switch is situated within the hood latch assembly. To swap it out, you'll need to undo the three 10mm bolts securing the latch – remember that the middle one may have a plastic cap on it that you'll need to lever off. Lift the latch out, disconnecting both the hood release cable and the switch's electrical connector. Substituting the entire hood latch assembly will run about $50 with aftermarket parts, which is less expensive than just replacing the sensor alone, an option that could cost up to $80. In the meantime, to prevent the alarm from sounding, you could simply unplug the electrical connector until you replace the latch, but keep in mind that the alarm won't be armed.
