In your Toyota RAV4, if you hear a whining noise while in gear, it likely signifies that the transmission fluid is running low. When the fluid level is insufficient, the transmission's internal parts may not be adequately lubricated. To address this issue, it is recommended to inspect for any leaks in the transmission fluid. Pay close attention to any new whining sounds, as a faulty input shaft bearing could be the root cause. This bearing is positioned inside the transmission housing. Although wheel bearings are usually found in the wheel hubs, a failing one can sometimes emit a sound that seems to be coming from the transmission. While failing wheel bearings typically produce a roaring noise, they can also generate a whining sound during driving.
