As the fluid continues to leak, the transmission fluid level decreases, resulting in slipping transmission. If left unaddressed, this could ultimately cause permanent damage to the transmission. A leaking axle seal at the rear differential or transfer unit could emit a distinct gear oil smell from underneath the vehicle.
