In a 2005 Dodge Ram, the ABS and brake indicator lights illuminate due to a faulty speed sensor or low brake fluid. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) monitors either transmission or wheel speed. The Engine Control Module (ECM) utilizes this data to adjust engine operations like ignition timing, fuel mixture, transmission shifting, and diagnostics. If the PCM doesn't receive a valid speed signal from these sensors, it cannot properly control gear shifts in the transmission. This might lead to rough or quick shifting, yet you can still drive the vehicle, with the brakes functioning. When driving on slippery surfaces, manual brake pumping may be necessary to prevent wheel lockup and skidding, similar to driving without modern ABS systems.
