If your car's check engine light comes on, it could be because of a vacuum or emissions leak, which might just be a loose gas cap. In a Chevy Traverse, more serious causes could be a faulty O2 sensor or a failing catalytic converter. If you notice a sudden decrease in gas mileage, the O2 sensor might need replacing. It keeps an eye on the oxygen levels in the exhaust to help the engine with its fuel mixture. The catalytic converter helps change harmful gases like carbon monoxide into less harmful ones but can get clogged up over time. If the car's computer detects unusual emission levels, the check engine light will come on.

My vehicle experienced a similar issue. I was informed that even though there wasn't an official recall, there was a notification. The dealership replaced a valve in the engine of my car. I recommend reaching out to the dealership for further assistance.
