There are multiple reasons why the heater in your Ford Focus may have stopped working, ranging from serious issues like a failed BCM to simpler problems like a blown fuse. The most common causes of heater malfunctions include a blown motor, thermostat failure from electronic or interface errors, and a blown resistor. These issues may require replacing a faulty part to fix. If the thermostat is failing due to a software issue, you may need to take your car to a dealership or mechanic to resolve it.
Although there could be several reasons why the heater in your Ford Focus is not functioning, the three most probable causes are a faulty heater blower engine, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a defective heater blower motor resistor.
If my situation mirrored yours, the heater would function temporarily before turning cold. The issue was likely an airlock trapped in the coolant system, which I resolved by opening the expansion tank, filling it to the brim with coolant, and replacing the cap. After starting the car, I allowed it to idle for a few minutes to warm up, then increased the revs to 3500 rpm for 30 seconds before idling for another 30 seconds. I repeated this process several times (usually 4 or 5) until the heater began blowing hot air at idle. This method effectively purges the airlock from the pressurized system.
