If your check engine light comes on, it might be because of a leak in the vacuum or emissions system, which could be as simple as a loose gas cap. In a 2009 Toyota Corolla, more serious reasons could be a faulty O2 sensor or a failing catalytic converter. You might need to replace the O2 sensor if you suddenly notice a drop in fuel efficiency. This sensor keeps track of the oxygen levels in the exhaust and gives important data to the engine for maintaining the right air/fuel ratio. The catalytic converter turns carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide but can get clogged over time. When the emissions readings are off, the check engine light will turn on.
