If you're having trouble with the keyless entry on your Subaru Outback not working, the most common reason is likely a dead battery inside it. The key fob uses a CR2032 (3-volt lithium "watch battery") which can run out of power over time with regular use. You can easily find a replacement battery for just a few dollars at any electronics store or online. To check if the issue is with the battery, try using another key fob; if it successfully unlocks your Subaru, then you know the problem is with the dead battery in the original fob. If using a different fob doesn't work, make sure the battery isn't running low, as a low battery can cause the remote entry to stop functioning. If the battery is not the problem, you may need to re-sync the key fob with your vehicle using the instructions provided in your manual.

The primary concerns with the Subaru Outback's keyless entry system and its key fob are the battery in the key fob dying and the key fob losing its connection with the car.

If your key fob battery is functioning properly, make sure to clean all the contact points - the small springy parts - that come into contact with the battery, along with the two small square pads on the circuit board where the springy parts touch. You can use a clean pencil eraser for this task (I also added some fresh solder to the circuit board pads). I followed these steps, and it successfully restored both of my key fobs from only working up close or not at all, to working perfectly like new.
