The Ford F-150 wrench symbol indicates a check engine issue, and it cannot be manually reset. The light alerts you when something is wrong with the vehicle, with a range of potential causes. Rather than spending time searching for a potential problem yourself, it’s recommended to visit a mechanic who can utilize an OBD tool to identify and diagnose the issue based on the trouble code. Once the problem is identified, it can be addressed and the light will turn off. Before seeking professional help, it is advisable to check the gas cap and fuel door, as a missing or open cap can also trigger the light. Make sure to verify this simple issue before scheduling a mechanic appointment.

When the warning light comes on and the speed reaches 0 in my 2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost, I can turn off the truck and everything is fine as long as I do it carefully.

The wrench light on the dashboard of a Ford F-150 signals a problem with either the all-wheel drive system or the powertrain.

The wrench light illuminated on the dashboard of my 2013 F150 with a 5.0 flex fuel engine. All the gauges became inactive and the digital displays went dark. The acceleration was sluggish, almost as if there was a speed limit imposed. Additionally, the airbag light was also illuminated. Do you have any suggestions or insights on what could be causing this issue?

What triggers the wrench symbol to illuminate on a 2013 Ford King Ranch?

My 2018 F-150 died while I was driving to a medical appointment. The wrench and check engine lights came on, and the truck stalled when I turned onto a side street. I managed to restart it in neutral, but the wrench light remained on. When I took it to the dealership after my surgery, they said they couldn't look at it for 3 to 4 days. After waiting and the lights went off, I left my truck there for four days, but they never got around to fixing it. Eventually, I discovered that filling gas while the engine is running can cause this issue, but the dealership couldn't identify it. I ended up wasting time and money on a rental before resolving the problem on my own. Since then, all warning lights have turned off, and I haven't experienced any further issues.

The design issues in these motors are unbelievable! I recently replaced a motor in one, and now it's displaying powertrain problems. Everything was fine before, so why is this happening now?

My wrench light came on while driving at 80 mph and I lost 6th gear. All the digital displays on the dashboard went blank. I was able to drive to work about 5 miles without any other issues. After turning the car off and then back on, everything displayed properly. I spoke with Ford, they quoted me $145 to do a diagnostic scan to hopefully find a code, or I can just keep driving and see if the issue happens again. Only time will tell.

How did the operation turn out?

Just got my hands on a 2013 King Ranch, and it's the best truck I've ever owned. I noticed that the wrench light would come on sometimes when I first drove it, and at one point even the check engine light lit up. Took it to Auto Zone, and they diagnosed it as a speed sensor error. Did some research online and found out that low transmission fluid could be the culprit. Went to Valvoline Oil Change where the mechanic suggested a full transmission flush. The fluid that was drained out was dark brown and burnt, which was a concern since transmission fluid is supposed to be pink. After the flush, the wrench light appeared for a couple of days but hasn't come back on in a month. I've even been trying to trigger it again without success. Now, my truck feels like a "Texas Cadillac"! Hope this story helps. - JDP

The wrench light will turn on if the engine control module (ECM) detects an issue with the drivetrain. Mine came on on November 14, 2022. The wrench light on my F-150 is different from the check engine light. I remotely started my truck to warm it up and after 10 minutes, when I tried to get in, the whole truck was shaking as if some of the spark plugs were not working. The wrench light was on, and when I pressed the gas pedal, there was no response - the ECM had activated limp mode. I turned off the truck and attempted to restart it. After longer than usual cranking, it finally started, with the wrench light still on, and now the check engine light was on too. After leaving it for several hours, I tried starting it again, and it started immediately, with the wrench light off but the check engine light still on. It accelerated normally. I turned it off, connected my code scanner, and found code P2112 indicating a stuck throttle plate. I cleared the code, took it for a drive, and the check engine light remained off with no pending codes. I opened the hood, removed the hose from the throttle body, and sprayed throttle body cleaner around the throttle plate to remove the small amount of dirt I could see. So far, the truck has been running smoothly.

I had just begun pulling a 2500-pound trailer to Florida on the highway when the yellow wrench warning light illuminated. Despite this, it didn't affect my speed. I exited the highway, turned off the vehicle, consulted the owner's manual which mentioned something about a "limp home mode." The warning light disappeared upon restarting the vehicle and it never reappeared during the 5600 miles of towing and driving through Florida back to Michigan. From that point on, I started using tow mode to prevent frequent shifting on hills.

Seems like I'm in a similar situation. My 2013 eco motor recently had the front airbag warning light and wrench light come on simultaneously. Shifting gears felt different with these warnings on. I turned the truck off and on again, and everything returned to normal. I noticed another post mentioning the driver side airbag warning light coming on too. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening? I'd appreciate any insight before scheduling an appointment at the Ford dealership. Thanks.

Just purchased a 2013 King Ranch with 160,000 miles in great condition. The wrench warning kept coming on almost every time I took it for a drive. When I stopped and turned off the car, the warning disappeared, but a few times I couldn't immediately pull over. The "check engine" light also came on, but it went away after I stopped and restarted the car. After researching, I discovered that low transmission fluid could be causing these issues. I noticed that whenever the wrench warning appeared, the transmission would either slip or shift roughly. I took my truck to Valvoline where they completely replaced the transmission fluid. The old fluid that came out was very dark, almost black. The problem occurred once more when I left, but since then, I have not experienced any more issues. I tested the transmission by driving it and intentionally trying to replicate the slipping or rough shifting, but there was no problem at all. The truck now runs smoothly! I recommend starting with a transmission flush if you encounter similar issues. I hope this information is helpful. Feel free to reach out with any questions at jdpdoorman@yahoo.com.

My 2017 F150's wrench light suddenly turned on today right when it reached 100,000 miles. That's pretty strange. When I contacted Ford, they advised me to have it checked for potential powertrain problems.

My 2013 Ford F-150 with an eco boost engine turned on yesterday and then twice today. I turned it off and restarted it, and it worked perfectly fine both times.

In 2013, the wrench light appeared on my F150 and I took it to the Ford dealer for diagnosis. They found a problem with the molded lead frame in the transmission, and after spending $935 to fix it, my truck now runs perfectly.

My 2016 Ford F150 Lariat 5.0 is showing a check engine light and a wrench symbol. After turning it off, it won't start unless I use jumper cables. This morning, I started it up fine, drove for 10 minutes, then the two lights came on again. Any thoughts on what might be causing this – could it be a weak battery or a faulty alternator leading to low voltage?

In 2014, the wrench symbol on my F-150 lit up, and the truck lost power. After turning off the truck and restarting it, the wrench symbol disappeared, and the truck ran smoothly again.

In 2013, my Ford F150 experienced a Fuel Pump Driver Module failure that caused the truck not to start due to a lack of fuel. After replacing the faulty part and discovering that the fuse was also blown, I temporarily borrowed a fuse from another slot to get the truck running. I have since replaced the borrowed fuse, but now the Wrench indicator and the Check Engine Light are both on without any error codes. The truck runs fine otherwise, but I thought the issues would clear up on their own after replacing the fuse.

I ran into a similar issue tonight where my truck seemed to be struggling when shifting into third gear. I went to Advanced Auto, but they couldn't find any blown fuses. After restarting the truck, it's now working fine. Hey, Dan and Ferdinand, did you have any luck figuring out what was wrong with yours?
