The Chevrolet Malibu mid-sized car typically lasts between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, which equates to around 10 to 15 years or more. The longevity of the vehicle largely depends on consistent maintenance. It is recommended to service your Malibu every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever occurs first, including oil changes, brake fluid checks, power steering and transmission fluid inspections. Additionally, all filters, such as fuel and cabin air, need to be examined for dirt or blockages and replaced if necessary. Owners of Malibu vehicles with timing belts should monitor them for wear and tear. It is also advised to regularly rotate your tires. Adhering to these maintenance practices will help keep your car running smoothly for over a decade.

It's about figuring out what's causing the issue by turning things on and off.

  • Josie T.

I own a 2003 Malibu that has been acting like it's stuck in cruise control. The issue seems to come and go on its own. I took it to a repair shop where they replaced the idle valve and throttle, which hopefully fixed the problem. It's driving well now, but I've had some other issues with the car. I've had to replace the same hub four times, needed a new fuel pump shortly after purchase, and had to replace a transmission line. Despite regular oil changes, I have a minor oil leak. My car has 153,000 miles on it, and I'm hoping to reach 200,000. I typically spend around $1,000 a year on repairs. The gas mileage isn't great anymore, so I'm considering buying a new car that may save on gas and reduce repair costs. I haven't made a decision yet due to the impact of Covid-19.

I own a 2005 Malibu with a V6 engine that has traveled 213,000 miles. I've only needed to do regular maintenance like changing brakes, control arm bushings, and tie rod ends, as everything inside the car is working well. There's some significant rust behind the lower body trim, likely from driving on gravel roads, but it's not visible from the outside. Despite that, the car still has strong acceleration for passing on the highway.

Avoid purchasing a Chevy Malibu at all costs! This vehicle is extremely low in quality. My experience with a new Malibu was disastrous - the engine suddenly shut down while driving, the passenger seat stopped adjusting 3 years after purchase, the power steering failed without warning, and both rear passenger doors wouldn't lock after just 3 years of ownership.
