Until the year 2010, the Hyundai Sonata had a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds, equal to half a ton. When dividing this number by ten to determine the maximum tongue weight, it comes out to 100 pounds, which isn't very significant. However, starting from 2011, the listed trailer weight suddenly increased to 2,000 pounds according to the owner's manual. This is a more substantial capacity, useful in various scenarios where towing a ton could be beneficial. It's unclear what brought about this change, as the engines used in the model years were the same or similar, and there were no major alterations during the 2011 model year. It wasn't until 2014 that a new generation was introduced. It's important to note that it is advisable to avoid hauling heavy loads with a passenger sedan as the transmission may not be designed to handle heavy towing. Consider this when deciding how much weight to carry on the back of the vehicle.
