The latest Ford Explorers do not provide a method for owners to inspect the transmission fluid themselves. Instead, the only way to check it is by a mechanic or dealership utilizing a check valve on the transmission's side. Ford strongly advises against trying to do it independently as it could result in fluid loss. With the advancement of transmissions, many manufacturers, including Ford, have chosen to restrict owner access and prefer professional monitoring. Ford is confident in the tight seal of their transmissions, believing they should only be serviced by experts to prevent any potential fluid leaks.

I don't see a dipstick for the transmission; it's sealed. I might need to bring my vehicle to a professional because I'm uncertain about how to check it myself. I am currently looking for a shop to have it inspected.

To check the transmission fluid in a Ford Explorer, find the cap and dipstick at the front of the engine bay. Make sure the engine is running when you do this. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then take it out again to check the level and thickness of the fluid.

My 2014 Explorer seems to be one of the final models to come with an ATF fill cap that has a dipstick for checking and topping up the fluid level. The cap is situated on the transmission, below and slightly to the left of the air filter housing. I can manage to reach down and unscrew the cap without needing to take anything apart.

Well, it really varies based on both the year and the specific trim style. My 2012 Limited EcoBoost model comes with a sealed transmission. The cap for refilling is situated on the top of the transmission, slightly to the left of the air filter housing. If you remove the piece that houses the MAF sensor, you will find it right there. The plug is located on the right side of the transmission if you trace it from that spot. It's relatively simple as long as you are able to raise and level the vehicle. Despite having 20-inch rims, the car sits quite low to the ground.

How do I inspect the transmission fluid in my 2003 Ford Explorer?

  • bigredbikerMike

The 2015 Explorer comes equipped with a dipstick located directly beneath the air cleaner. Ford claims that there is no dipstick, but I can confirm that mine does have one.
