The backup camera in the Mitsubishi Outlander may fail to work when you shift into reverse. If a "Shift Position R" error message appears on the monitor, it means the camera did not activate due to a communication issue with the ETACS programming. This problem usually arises because the camera is not connected to an external reverse signal input, but instead relies on CAN signals to communicate with the Outlander's head unit. One solution is to replace the head unit with a model that can receive the reverse shift signal from the back of the vehicle.

Based on what I've seen, the problem isn't with the camera wiring or the switch that activates it. It appears to be a software issue with the head unit. The camera works perfectly when you access the camera setting. I've heard that there is a recall for 2022 models because of a similar issue.

I managed to resolve the issue I was having by using a pin to reset the system. I encountered the same problem and found that inserting the pin into the small reset hole, located to the left over the screen, caused the system to shut down. I then turned off the car and restarted it. After waiting for around 2 minutes, the reverse camera started working again. I am curious to hear if this solution helps others as well.
