The P0442 trouble code in a Chevy Equinox indicates a detected leak in the evap system. The primary reason for this code is often a loose fuel cap. Other causes may include a leak in the EVAP system line or damage to the charcoal canister. If the charcoal canister is damaged or clogged, it can prevent proper purging of fuel vapors. An indicator of a faulty charcoal canister is the illumination of the check engine light. When the car's computer detects an EVAP system leak, such as from a cracked charcoal canister, it will activate the check engine light.
If the fuel tank cap on your Chevy Equinox is not secured properly, your vehicle might identify a minor issue in the evaporative emission system, which could trigger a p0442 trouble code.
