When your Chevy Impala triggers a P0446 error code, it indicates an issue with the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system. Typically, the problem arises from a clogged vent solenoid, causing a lack of fresh air reaching the EVAP carbon canister. This canister stores vapors that the EVAP system prevents from escaping, with charcoal pellets inside absorbing and storing these vapors. The engine control module operates the vent control valve to allow air into the canister to release the vapors into the engine's air intake. If a P0446 code appears, the ECM has detected a short in the circuit during a leak test. Common symptoms that may accompany this code are the check engine light coming on, a gasoline odor, and reduced fuel efficiency. A loose or damaged gas cap is often the main culprit. If you need to replace the evaporative canister, it will cost approximately $590 to $700, with labor expenses ranging from $200 to $270.
