The Hyundai Sonata can have issues with its gear shift, including rough shifting and sticking gears. The transmission plays a crucial role in the functioning of the car, so problems can arise over time. Symptoms like shuddering, rough shifts, jerking, and stuck gears may indicate transmission trouble. It's important to address issues promptly, such as leaks in the transmission fluid, to prevent further damage. Delayed shifts can lead to problems with acceleration. Routine maintenance, such as replacing the transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, is essential. Additionally, outdated fluid can produce unpleasant sounds, while a worn-out torque converter can cause headaches.

In regard to the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, issues with the transmission may involve slipping when changing gears and struggle with shifting altogether, potentially leading to the necessity of transmission replacement or repair.

I'm not yet skilled enough that it caused a major issue, but simply turning the car off and then starting it again about 4 or 5 times didn't solve the problem. Restarting the car seems to help fix many of the computer issues that Sonatas may have. It's important to be aware that if you let someone else drive your car, they may not tell you the full extent of any mishaps, like spilling a drink near the shifter, which could lead to liquid seeping into the compartment below where some transmission plugs are located, causing shifting problems until the liquid dries. If you notice shifting issues after a spill, lift the center console and thoroughly clean the area with a towel and Windex, ensuring it dries completely before reassembling and restarting the car. Shift through all the gears a few times to help the computer recalibrate.

Completely off-topic, but I own a 2015 Hyundai Sonata with 220,000 miles on it, still running on the original engine and transmission. I plan to pass down this Sonata and buy another one. Do you think it's better to wait for the release of the 2023 Sonata? I've heard that Hyundai has addressed the engine problems, but newer models seem to be experiencing transmission issues.

My 2020 Sonata is back at the dealership for transmission problems yet again. I had it replaced at 24,000 miles, but now with only 6,000 miles on the new one, I'm facing the same issue all over again.

I own a 2020 SEL with 3,000 miles on it. Even after getting two updates from the dealership, the transmission still shifts the same way, causing jerking and inconsistent shifting.

My 2020 Sonata Sport 1.6T has been parked at the dealership for a whole month now because the transmission is damaged at 24,000 miles. They mentioned it will take at least another month before they can repair it. It's really annoying.

I own a 2020 Sonata with 15,000 miles on it, and the transmission is starting to slip too.
