In 2008, the GMC Sierra and other GMC and Chevrolet trucks experienced problems with their ignition switches. These issues manifested as intermittent warning lights appearing on the dashboard, as well as instances where the switch would cause the truck to stall or fail to start altogether. Typically, this problem is accompanied by the OBD code P1682, which refers to the "Ignition 1 Switch Circuit 2." Besides the switch itself failing, the problem could also be due to issues like an open or shorted harness, poor electrical connection, or a faulty engine control module. Replacing the ignition switch can be done relatively easily at home with tools like a flat head screwdriver, 10mm socket, ratchet, socket extensions, and a pick. Alternatively, if you opt to have it replaced by a professional, the estimated cost is around $60 to $80 for parts and $90 to $110 for labor.
