The BMW 1 Series is known to have some common issues with its catalytic converter like a strong sulfur smell and dark exhaust smoke. Maintaining the car includes changing the coolant every 60,000 miles or so and replacing the air filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. The spark plugs typically need to be replaced every 100,000 miles unless they are copper, in which case they should be changed every 30,000 miles. Engine problems such as overheating can be serious, potentially leading to car fires or even explosions. Other issues like excessive oil consumption, loose spark plugs, and worn gaskets should be addressed promptly to avoid further damage. Oil leaks are another problem that may arise and should be fixed as soon as possible.
