The 2004 Ford Explorer utilizes Valvoline dot 3 and dot 4 brake fluid. Changing the brake fluid in a vehicle can vary in complexity depending on whether you need to bleed the brakes or simply add more fluid. If you only need to top up the fluid, locate the intake port under the car hood, unscrew the cap, and check the container for the MIN and FULL lines. Fill the container between these lines, closer to the full mark, then screw the cap back on. If bleeding the brakes is necessary, begin by lifting the car with a jack and removing the tires. Starting at the back, find the bleeder valve on the wheel, attach a piece of rubber tubing, open the valve, and press the brake pedal slowly. Watch the fluid flow into a bucket through the tube and continue until there's no more fluid, then move on to the next tire. After bleeding all tires, reinstall the tires and refill the brakes as needed.
