The 2016 Subaru Outback requires sae 0w-20 oil and can hold 5.1 quarts with a dry filter. When changing the oil, ensure the car has been turned off and parked for a couple of hours to let the oil cool down. Locate the oil pan and drain plug underneath the engine. Place a bucket under the plug, remove it, and let the oil drain completely, which may take about an hour. Once the dripping stops, replace the drain plug. Next, find the intake port on the top of the oil pan and fill it using a funnel. Be careful not to overfill; a little under is okay, but overfilling can cause leaks and oil burn off. After filling it up, close the port, clean up any spills, and you're done.

The official manual for the factory recommends using 5W-30 oil, not 5W-20 oil.

The 2016 Subaru Outback needs full synthetic oil for all its versions. The 2.5L 4-cylinder engine takes SAE 0W-20 and can hold 5.1 quarts of oil with a dry filter. If you have the 3.6L V6 engine, it uses SAE 5W-20 and can hold 6.9 quarts of oil, including the filter.
