In the 2003 Ford Explorer, the 4.6L Engine uses Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil. An alternative oil with the same viscosity rating and meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-H and API certification for gasoline engines can also be used. For the 4.0L Engine, the required oil is Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil, but a different oil with the same viscosity and meeting specification WSS-M2C205“A can be used. It is advised to check the oil level each time you refuel and to change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The 4.0L engine can hold 5.0 quarts, while the 4.6L engine can hold 6.0 quarts when changing with the filter.
