The 2000 Ford Explorer requires mercon automatic power transmission fluid. To replace the power steering fluid, start by finding the clear plastic container under the hood near the window. Use a pump to remove all the fluid from the container. When the fluid level is low, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and then the other to drain the fluid from the wheel into the container. Once the container is empty, refill it to the full line, being careful not to overfill. It may take some time for the steering wheel to loosen up, so test it by driving for about 20 minutes to ensure the process was successful.
