If you drive a 2009 Nissan Altima with a manual transmission, it's important to use Genuine Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, with a viscosity of SAE 75W-85. For vehicles with a CVT transmission, it's recommended to stick with Genuine Nissan CVT fluid NS-2. While compatible fluids from other brands are available for the manual transmission, it is advised not to use any other type of fluid for the CVT. Using a different transmission fluid can cause damage to your CVT transmission and is not covered under the Nissan new vehicle limited warranty. It is advisable to replace your CVT fluid every 25,000 miles or so.

In the 2007-2012 Nissan Altima models, they used the NS2 transmission fluid, while in the 2013 and newer models, they switched to the NS3 fluid due to a redesign in the CVT system.
