The 2001 Chevy Cavalier requires ATF Type III-H transmission fluid. To change the transmission fluid, start by ensuring that the car is parked on a level surface and then opening the hood. Locate the transmission fluid reservoir, which is usually near the transmission, and find the dipstick. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it back out to check the fluid level. Take note of the amount of fluid indicated on the dipstick and the quantity needed to fill the reservoir. Use a funnel to add fluid until it reaches the full line, or just below it. Avoid overfilling. Close the reservoir securely, and you're all set.
