In order to change the transmission fluid in a 2013 Ford F-150, you'll need to use Mercon V, which is a fully synthetic automatic transmission fluid. To start, ensure the car is parked on level ground and open the hood. Locate the transmission fluid reservoir, usually near the transmission itself, and find the dipstick. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again to check the fluid level. Take note of the amount of fluid in the reservoir and determine how much more fluid is needed to fill it up. Utilize a funnel to slowly fill the reservoir until it reaches the appropriate level, either full or just below. Avoid overfilling the reservoir. Once done, close the reservoir and you're all set.

Hey Mike E, that's not even close to how you go about changing the transmission fluid in a 2013 Ford F-150.

Refer to your manual for fluid amounts and preferred type. For my F150 with a 3.5 Ecoboost engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, specifically the 6R80 model, use only Motorcraft Mercon LV fluid; no substitutes are acceptable.

Mike E's response appears to be off the mark. When checking under the hood, a transmission dipstick is not present. Ford has installed a smaller version that is accessible from underneath the vehicle. To reach it, you need to take off the fill hole cover. Additionally, I think the appropriate Mercon is LV, not V.

The Ford F-150 requires a synthetic transmission fluid, and you can use synthetic transmission fluids from brands such as STP, Valvoline, and Castrol, which are all compatible options.

My Ford F-150 from 2013 is indicating that it needs to be taken to a mechanic. Can you tell me why that is necessary?

The 2013 Ford F150 with 6R80 transmission requires MERCON LV transmission fluid and should only use MOTORCRAFT fluid.
