As per the manual for the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, previously only Dexron-III was recommended for the transmission fluid. However, GM now advises using Dexron-V ATF as it offers a longer lifespan and better performance in high temperatures. It is advised to regularly check the fluid level, ideally at least once a month. If the level drops below normal, add fluid to bring it back to the appropriate range. Persistent low levels may indicate a leak, so it's important to have the transmission inspected and repaired to prevent overheating and slipping, which can damage the bands and shorten the transmission's lifespan.
The 2002 Chevy Suburban requires Valvoline Synthetic Transmission Fluid in 1-quart size which costs $9.99.
