If you start seeing a decrease in fuel efficiency all of a sudden, you might need to replace the O2 sensor. The catalytic converter is responsible for converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, and it can get clogged over time. When the engine control unit detects abnormal emission levels, the "check engine" light will turn on.
