Several factors could lead to a ticking sound in the Honda CR-V engine, with the primary factor being low oil levels. Inadequate oil can prevent proper lubrication of the engine's internal moving components, typically resulting in a ticking noise originating from the valve train. If left unresolved, running the engine under these conditions can lead to potential damage. Another possible reason for the ticking noise could be a malfunctioning idler pulley, as the bearings inside it may deteriorate over time. When the belt interacts with worn bearings on the pulley, it can also produce a ticking sound. Additionally, other sources of ticking may include contact between an object and the belt or cooling fan.

In 2017, my CR-V Touring AWD started making a ticking noise that got progressively worse. I brought it to the dealer, and after checking the oil, which was at 30% according to the maintenance indicator, they changed it even though the ticking continued. Eventually, they determined that both the intake valve and exhaust valve needed adjustments, which resolved the ticking. I've been a loyal Honda customer since 1991 without any issues, but this time, I opted for the Honda extended warranty, and I'm grateful I did because the repair was covered at no cost. I wasn't impressed with the performance of the 1.5 turbo engine and wouldn't choose it again.

If you hear a ticking sound coming from your Honda CRV's engine, it might be caused by a malfunctioning purge valve solenoid. Have it checked out by a dealership for proper diagnosis and repair.
