Hundreds of Nissan owners have made complaints to the NHTSA about excessive body rust on their vehicles, particularly affecting the passenger and driver floorboards and underbody. This rust problem has led to costly repairs that can amount to thousands of dollars. The majority of complaints are related to Nissan Altima models from 2002 to 2006, highlighting issues with the manufacturer's overall rust protection. Operating a vehicle with rusted floorboards poses risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning, accidents, and fires. This problem typically occurs before reaching 50,000 miles and is observed in various weather conditions. Despite no reported fatalities due to Nissan's rust issues, the company has not issued a recall unlike other automakers faced with similar problems.

I own a 2012 Xterra, and there is rust on the rear passenger quarter panel right above the tire. I've noticed that many other Xterras also have rust in that spot. I plan to spend around $1000 to get it repaired, but I believe Nissan should address this issue. Every Xterra I've seen so far has rust in the same area.

Toyota has faced massive financial losses due to lawsuits related to rust issues, particularly with Tacoma trucks and 4Runner SUVs. This problem has been a major concern, and there are numerous discussions about it on off-road forums, where Toyota seems to take notice. While Toyota may not openly admit to having a rust problem, it is advisable to have a skilled mechanic inspect the frame and connected parts before making a purchase.
