The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 has three engine options that require different types and amounts of oil. The 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo diesel needs 8.5 quarts of SAE 0W-30 full synthetic oil, while the two 3.5L 6-cylinder versions (gasoline and Flex Fuel) each need 7.4 quarts of SAE 0W-40. The diesel engine requires a specific type of oil, but the 3.5L engines provide more flexibility. For the 3.5L engines, you can use any 5W oil when it's above -13 degrees Fahrenheit. You have the option of using 10W when it's above -4 degrees, 15W at 5 degrees, and 20W if the temperature is above 23 degrees. This means that if you live in a warmer area, you might choose a different oil to save some money.
