The standard engine in the 2000 Ford Explorer was a 4.0L V6, but there was an option to upgrade to a 5.0L V8. Both engines required 5 US quarts of motor oil, with the V6 needing 5W-30 and the V8 needing 5W-20. The oil drain plug had a 15mm head size and needed 20 lbs-ft of torque to be removed. Oil changes for these vehicles were recommended every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

The 2000 Ford Explorer offers three engine choices: the 4.0L V6 SOHC, the 4.0L V6 (engine code X), and the 5.0L V8. All three require 5 quarts of 5W30 oil. But there's a new service bulletin from Ford advising that the 5.0L V8 engine should now use 5W20 synthetic oil.
