The 2014 Ford Mustang requires 5w-20 oil for optimal engine performance. Using high-quality oil is crucial to keep the engine running smoothly, but issues could arise over time. One common problem is a pungent burning smell, which should be addressed promptly to prevent a potential engine explosion. Low-quality oil can lead to engine failure, indicated by knocking noises and reduced gas mileage. Regular oil changes are necessary, recommended every 5,000 to 10,000 miles to avoid engine problems.

From 2011 to 2014, the regular 5.0 Mustang engines require 5w20 oil, regardless of any performance enhancements like a Track Pack, flamethrowers, or turbo boosters. The only exception is the Boss 302 model, which uses 5w50 oil due to its different engine design. Ford utilized 5w20 early on because their engines had tight tolerances that 5w30 couldn't penetrate effectively for proper lubrication.

The 2014 Ford Mustang accepts Motorcraft's premium synthetic blend or full synthetic blend motor oils, specifically recommending SAE 5W-20 for the 3.7L and 5.0L engines. However, for Mustangs fitted with the Track Pack option, Motorcraft's full synthetic 5W-50 is the recommended oil.
