The 2002 GMC Sonoma recommends using Valvoline Conventional Transmission fluid, which comes in 1-quart containers sold at most auto parts stores across the US. It requires either Dexron VI or ATF 4 fluid and can hold up to 5.0 quarts. Prices for the fluid range from $8 to $43 per container, depending on the quantity and brand. If you opt for a professional mechanic to replace the fluid, expect to pay an extra $40 to $98 for labor. The fluid reservoir is situated on the left side of the transmission, on the passenger side of the engine bay, under a cap that must be removed to add new fluid.
