The transmission works fine, but when I encounter heavy traffic with frequent stops and starts, it struggles to shift into second gear unless I accelerate and then release the gas pedal. After that, it shifts normally. If I turn off the car for a few minutes, the shifting issue seems to resolve itself. I cannot figure out the reason for this problem.

We owned a 2002 Taurus and experienced similar issues that led us to discover a failed torque converter, which is a frequent occurrence around the 100,000-mile mark for this model. After replacing it, we were able to drive another 100,000 miles with no problems.
