In regards to the Toyota 4Runner, there isn't a specific timing chain replacement timeframe like there is for a timing belt, which is usually replaced every 60,000 miles. The timing chain in the 4Runner is designed to be durable and ideally should last as long as the engine does. To ensure the longevity of the timing chain, it's crucial to stick to your regular oil change routine. If oil pressure drops too low, the chain may not be properly lubricated, leading to potential damage and costly repairs from parts grinding together.

I've been working as a Toyota mechanic for 40 years. If you take good care of your Toyota engine with a timing chain, it can last as long as the engine itself. There seems to be some confusion between chains and belts. A belt should typically be replaced at 100,000 miles, unless you put a lot of strain on the engine, in which case it should be done at 75,000 miles. However, I have seen belts that have lasted up to 150,000 miles and still look brand new.

Do you mean the timing chain needs to be replaced every 40,000 miles? I drive an xRunner with 330,000 miles on it, and I still have the original clutch, chain, water pump, and so on.

It's recommended to replace Toyota timing belts every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. These engines are known as interference engines because if the timing belt snaps and the engine keeps running, it's very likely that a valve and piston will collide, leading to significant internal damage. In contrast, a timing chain usually provides a warning sign with a progressively louder clicking noise in the engine compartment before any issues occur. Timing chains typically last the entire lifespan of the engine, so such incidents are rare.

This discussion is completely pointless. Good job.

The timing belt does not have to be replaced every 40,000 miles, but regular replacement is necessary. Your car manual doesn't specify a set interval because not all cars require the change at the same time. If you neglect vehicle maintenance, your car's longevity may suffer compared to if you properly care for it.

Charles, you are mistaken. I own a Mercedes E320 with 260,000 miles on it and I have never had to replace the timing chain, the same goes for my Toyota. Even at 40,000 miles, I only have to do regular oil changes on my cars, no other major maintenance is needed.

Timing chains in Toyota engines are built to last the entire lifespan of the engine due to their excellent craftsmanship. It is only necessary to inspect the engine if issues arise, and some elongation may occur after driving 200,000 to 500,000 miles.

    Incorrect......Extremely incorrect!

The timing chain in the Toyota 4Runner needs to be changed roughly every 40,000 miles.
