The 2012 Honda Civic's Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor is located on the right side of the engine bay, behind the valve cover, near the intake manifold. It's positioned under the timing chain cover, in front of the cylinder head. The CMP Sensor's main function is to determine the camshaft's position relative to the crankshaft. Signs that your sensor might be failing include the check engine light coming on, difficulty starting the engine or it not starting at all, and the vehicle jerking or surging when you accelerate. If the CMP Sensor needs replacing, the part alone can cost between $25 and $75, depending on whether you choose an OEM or aftermarket version.
