In the 2008 Chrysler Aspen, the EVAP canister sits above the fuel tank and holds about 1-2 pounds of activated charcoal. This charcoal acts as a sponge, absorbing and storing fuel vapors until the purge valve opens. Once the valve opens, the engine intake vacuum pulls the fuel vapors from the charcoal into the engine intake manifold. If the EVAP canister purge valve is failing, a rough idle and poor engine performance are likely to occur. The engine may feel weak and struggle to generate enough power for acceleration, causing a delay in response when pressing the pedal down for acceleration.
