The EWS module in your BMW E46 is located underneath the steering column on the left side. Begin by loosening the black plastic piece below the steering column, then unscrew the screws fastening the dash panel to the left of it to remove the entire piece. Above the pedals, you'll find a white rectangular plastic box secured by two yellow 10mm bolts – that's the EWS. Once you've removed the bolts, detach the wiring pigtail. Don't forget to bring this part and a key to a service center handling this security element.
