In a 2004 Dodge Durango, the fuel filter can be found inside the gas tank, where it is part of the fuel pump system. The filter cannot be replaced separately, so if it gets damaged or blocked, the entire fuel pump assembly will have to be changed. To replace the fuel pump, the gas tank must be taken out. Before starting the process, make sure to disconnect the fuel pump fuse, then run the engine until it stops on its own to relieve pressure from the fuel lines. After that, disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connections on top of the tank. The tank is supported by two straps, so you will need a jack that can span the width of the tank to assist in removal.

It sounds like the issue could be with the fuel pump seal, but it might be more practical to replace the entire fuel pump. I replaced mine with one from Autocone that comes with a lifetime warranty.

When the car is stopped at a red light, you can notice the smell of gasoline inside the car, and it made me think there might be an issue with the fuel tank or pump. Besides that, the car runs smoothly.
