The MAP sensor in the 2003 Ford F-150, also known as the "manifold absolute pressure" sensor, is actually called a MAF sensor, or "mass air flow" sensor. It is positioned on the intake tube, situated between the throttle body and the air filter housing. In newer F-150 models with an Ecoboost engine, there are two MAP sensors located above the intake manifold beneath the engine cover, close to the throttle body. The role of the MAF sensor is to monitor the air volume in the engine to ensure proper timing and spark. If the MAF malfunctions in the F-150, you may experience difficulties starting or turning over the vehicle, frequent stalling, hesitations or jerky movements while accelerating, and either a lean or rich idling condition. The average cost to replace the sensor is around $250-$400, inclusive of parts and labor.
